1 killed, 3 hurt in head-on crash near East Helena

EAST HELENA - A fatal head on collision near East Helena overnight has left one person dead and three others in the hospital.

The accident happened at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when the driver of a Mercury was headed westbound in the wrong lane on U.S. Highway 12 East near the overpass bridge. The vehicle nearly missed another vehicle before striking a Ford Probe head on.

"The maroon [car]...was traveling west in the eastbound lane. We know this from witnesses that actually witnessed the crash. The blue car, the Ford Probe, was traveling east in the passing lane. And there was a black pick up in front of the Ford Probe. The driver of the black pick up hit his brakes and swerved and got out of the way. I don't believe the Ford Probe ever saw it coming," said Montana Highway Patrol Trooper David Gleich.

The passenger of the Ford Probe was killed in the crash while two other people are listed in critical condition, and another is in serious condition. All of the victims were taken to St. Peter's Hospital in Helena.

Gleich says nobody was wearing seat belts, and added that alcohol has been determined to be a big factor in the crash. The Lewis & Clark County Attorney was on scene, as was the coroner. Criminal charges will likely be pursued.
