MISSOULA - The Granite County Sheriff's Department reports that a man was killed by an avalanche northeast of Philipsburg on Monday afternoon.
Granite County Sheriff Scott Dunkerson says his department received an emergency beacon call at about 3 p.m.
The victim was back-country skiing with friends but was the only one caught in the avalanche near Altoona, about 10 miles northeast of Philipsburg.
Dunkerson says several deputies and some volunteers formed a team to attempt a rescue, but that effort took hours - and by the time they arrived it was too late.
The man's name and place of residence is being withheld until after family members have been notified.
This is the second avalanche death in Montana within the last two weeks. A woman died several days after being critically injured when an avalanche slammed into several houses at the base of Mount Jumbo in Missoula.
