The State Medical Examiners have determined that Berry, who is originally from Pennsylvania, was assaulted, shot and then disposed of in the Clark Fork River.
Authorities say Berry was a transient new to the Missoula area.
Missoula County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Paige Pavalone says a fisherman found his body about 200 yards west of Grove Street near Home Harvest Loop Tuesday afternoon.
Pavalone says they know the body had been in the river for at least a few days, but exactly how long isn't clear yet.
"Upon the initial investigation they saw there was a lot of...I guess decomposition, and it was difficult to determine what actually had happened. We couldn't even get a proper identification on him, so the medical examiner was able to find more details as he launched his investigation," Pavalone explained.
