HELENA - There's a new Constitutional Initiative being proposed for the 2010 ballot as the Montana Coalition to Prevent Double Taxation is gathering signatures for CI 105.

The proposed measure would ban real estate transfer tax, which is a tax on property, including real estate, land, farms, ranches and inheritances.

"We want to make sure people know that this impacts so many different segment of Montana economy," explained the group's Chuck Denowh. "It impacts homeowners, business, agriculture.. it's across the board. So that is key to our signature gathering is just letting people know that they are impacted by this proposal."

Coalition members say that the taxes typically range from 1% to 2% of the sales price. The group contends the taxes are a second tax on property and should not be allowed by Montana law.

The Montana Association of Realtors, Montana Stockgrowers Association, and Montana Taxpayers Association have all come out in support of the initiative.

Currently, 37 states impose a real estate transfer tax. In 2008, Arizona passed a similar constitutional amendment to prohibit it.
