BOZEMAN - You know the old joke - Why did the chicken cross the road? Well today, people at Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport were asking - Why did the bear go to the airport?

An orphaned black bear cub was spotted at the airport Tuesday afternoon, prompting Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials to respond to the scene.

The young male black bear was darted by FWP while climbing a tree, spokesperson Andrea Jones said. He will be taken back to the FWP office where he will be evaluated to determine what will be done with him, Jones said.

The bear weighed just close to 20 pounds but should weigh about 60 pounds for his age. He is estimated to be six to seven months old, Jones said.

Airport director Brian Sprenger says the cub's appearance didn't cause any delays or any other interruptions at the airport.

Photos submitted by Shannon Buckland of Summit Air Ambulance who wrote, "Summit Air Ambulance had an unexpected visitor to our hanger today."
