BILLINGS - The Better Business Bureau has warned people affected by the tornado in Billings to beware of "storm chasing traveling contractors."

BBB says such outfits are usually from out of town or from out of state and use inferior materials and workmanship as a way to make quick money. Some of them ask for a deposit or for the entire coast upfront, but never return.

The Better Business Bureau offers the following information to avoid such scams:

  • Call your insurance agent and then start researching reliable contractors.
  • Check any prospects with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Ask the contractor for proof he or she is bonded and insured. Never rely on verbal confirmation.
  • Ask for a written contract and read it BEFORE signing anything.
