BIGFORK- One Flathead Valley company is fermenting, or rather, distilling its way to success despite a stale economy. The Whistling Andy distillery in Bigfork has won national acclaim and sells their homemade spirits around the world.
When you think of the small northwestern Montana town of Bigfork, you typically think of Flathead Lake. But did you know that Bigfork is also home, to one of the fastest growing liquor distilleries in the United States?
The Whistling Andy distillery, located just across the Flathead River from Bigfork, has a piece of news for you. Master distiller Brian Anderson says they now have whiskey which they plan to unveil on St. Patrick's Day.
"This is an American style whiskey, with mainly wheat and barley and a little bit of corn and a little bit of rye, it ages up quicker and it's got a real nice, nutty, sweet finish to it."
The new whiskey called Harvest Select, is very limited, so if you like your whiskey, you may want to drop by on St. Patrick's Day to try it. Anderson says since opening their doors in 2010, Whistling Andy's has done very well, including a recent national award.
"Having a hard time keeping up, we won an international spirit competition, this last summer, for our hibiscus, coconut rum. We beat out all the big boys in the world, so we've been, having a hard time keeping up."
The distillery is locally owned and operated in Bigfork, and Anderson says he's proud of their new whiskey, which did well in a blind taste test.
"Seventeen out of 20 chose us number one, the other three chose us number two, so we knew it was ready, what's wrong with those three people? I don't know, they've got a problem."
Anderson says he's truly living a dream right now.
"The fact that we've been open just a little over a year and we're distributed as far as we are, having a hard time keeping up, as soon as we make the product, it's gone out the door, I'm very happy with the position we are in."
