BILLINGS More than a dozen riders from across the country geared up for an equestrian competition in Billings as Rocky Mountain College played host to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Western Regional show, at the Intermountain Equestrian Center.
The regional show followed three western IHSA shows that also took place over the weekend with riders from several Montana colleges, as well as the College of Southern Idaho and Utah State University, competing against each other on Sunday.
One unique feature of the IHSA event was that participants compete with horses they have never ridden before.
"You have to figure out how to work with your partner and compete," Rocky Mountain College Equestrian Show Team coach Chris Brown explained.
"You want it to be as smooth and flowing as you'd think about a dance. You want the judge to not even see that you're working out there. That's how invisible your aids and cues are and how in tune you are. that's what you're striving to do."
The winners from the weekend's events will go on to compete at the semi-finals which are being held on March 24th aand March 25th at Florida State University in Ocala, Florida.
