MISSOULA - All season long we've ranked the top 10 boys and girls teams in Western Montana and last Friday, some of the top guys squads settled a few questions for us.
We ranked Stevensville #1, just ahead of Hellgate, because the Yellowjackets won their meeting in Missoula. But last week, the Knights returned the favor. Tres Tinkle scored 24, Devin Bray added 21 and Hellgate hammered Stevi in the rematch, 75-57.
On the same night just up the road in Florence, the Falcons hosted the only team to beat them all year, the Bigfork Vikings. Florence also served up some revenge. The Falcons jumped out to a double digit lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Brothers Rhett and Ryne Baerlocher combined for 28 points in a 55-38 drubbing of the Vikings.
So after the dust settled, here's what we're left with in our top 10 poll:
1 - Hellgate (14-2, Western AA)
2 - Glacier (13-3, Western AA)
3 - Stevensville (14-3, Southwest A)
4 - Florence (17-1, 6B)
5 - Bigfork (14-4, 7B)
6 - Columbia Falls (12-5, Northwest A)
7 - Flathead (9-6, Western AA)
8 - Drummond (16-2, 13C)
9 - Whitefish (10-6, Northwest A)
10 - Superior (15-3, 14C)
Hellgate takes the top spot back, Glacier climbs up to second and Stevensville falls to third. Florence moves back ahead of Bigfork, but we couldn't punish the Vikings and Yellowjackets much for those tough losses.
Columbia Falls blowout over Whitefish makes the Wildcats #6 and the Bulldogs fell to #9. Flathead continues to slip, dipping down to #7, their lowest spot this season. Drummond moves up to #8 and Superior joins the rankings at #10.
Arlee falls out of the poll after a thrilling 88-87 loss to Charlo.
