LIBBY- A Lincoln County fire department is being closed down after reportedly failing to comply with Montana law.

The Cabinet View Fire Department, which serviced about 60 residents south of Libby, has been under scrutiny from county officials for reportedly failing to obtain a state license to handle medical calls.

County officials said the department has also failed to work cooperatively with other emergency service providers.

Lincoln County Commissioner Tony Berget said allowing Cabinet View Fire Department to continue operating could put the whole county and taxpayers at risk.

"If we do nothing we're allowing them to break the law as we see it and actually the state has said the same thing," Berget said. "If someone were to get hurt they're going to go after the county and say hey this guy wasn't trained, how come you're allowing him to do this, and they'd be able to sue the county as a whole."

The fire department has 60 days to file a petition fighting the closure with county commissioners saying that a change in leadership could reopen the department.
