BOZEMAN - Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Bozeman was vandalized earlier this weekend, according to church officials and law enforcement.
Damage to the church is extensive, according to Father Leo Proxell, but nothing that can't be repaired. Sunday services were cancelled as law enforcement officials began an investigation.
Parishioners gathered around the church in shock and disbelief.
The damage was first discovered at around 7 a.m. Sunday when Proxell said a parishioner had arrived to set up for the early morning mass. Father Proxell arrived shortly after and notified Bozeman Police.
Father Leo told Montana Television Network affiliate KBZK in Bozeman that most of the damage was in the basement of the church, that messages had been spray painted in black paint on walls. Father Proxell also said items sacred to the church had been broken.
Holy Rosary Catholic Church was recently extensively remodeled. According to officials, renovation of the church began in 2005 when Father Proxell formed a committee to determine the priorities.
By 2005, the parish had 1,000 registered families, more than double the 450 when Father Proxell arrived in 2001.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Bozeman Police Department at (406) 582.2000.
