LIBBY- Engineers have begun core drilling at Flower Creek near Libby to determine where a new dam should be built. The current Flower Creek Dam is deteriorating and could pose a major threat to residents downstream if the dam were to fail.
Core drilling is taking place this week at the creek to determine where the best anchor for the dam will be installed. The drilling is the first step in building a new dam and will continue through the summer months.
"From an emergency standpoint yes I'm very excited that we're going to have a new dam up there-that we won't have that worry. We would eventually have to replace it because of the dam's age and condition that it was time for it to be replaced," Vic White with the Lincoln County Office of Emergency Services said.
Construction on the new dam is expected to begin in a year.
