MISSOULA - We all need calcium for healthy bones and Dr. Brad Pickhardt recently took some time to sort through the sometimes confusing world of calcium supplements.

Our bodies cannot make calcium, so we need to get it through our diet. But some of us lose more of this essential mineral than we're able to eat--and need a supplement. But just who that is and what kind of calcium is needed can be confusing. So, we talked with Endocrinologist Dr. Michelle Danichich for some advice.

We all have certain calcium requirements that we need to reach each day and if you can't do it, then a supplement is needed. You'd have to drink 32 ounces of milk a day to reach 1200 mg of calcium and for some that's too much.

It's also important to take vitamin D because that seems to be the vehicle to getting the calcium out of the stomach and into the bloodstream.

The bottom line is that getting enough calcium either through diet or with the help of supplements is only part of strong bones as a healthy lifestyle and exercise are also essential.
