GREAT FALLS- A woman diagnosed with incurable brain cancer wants to see the Grand Canyon before she dies, and her daughter-in-law is on a mission to make it happen.
Lisa Romero, 54, was diagnosed with brain cancer in July. Lisa's daughter-in-law, Sara Romero, said the family learned it was terminal Stage Four brain cancer, and doctors give Lisa anywhere from months to a couple years to live.
Three weeks ago, Lisa was struggling with the disease and was almost ready to give up, and wound up in the hospital. But after speaking with her husband of 37 years, Ken, she found new hope.
"...And then he said, 'But Lisa you can't go yet, we haven't been to the Grand Canyon," Sara said.
After hearing of this wish that Lisa had, Sara knew that she had to do something to make this happen.
"When she told me about the Grand Canyon, it planted a little seed in my brain. That you know what, we might not be able to save Lisa, but we can take her to the Grand Canyon," Sara recalled.
With Lisa's medical bills, funds for the trip were looking scarce. Sara took to the Internet and social media to create a way for her friends and family to donate to the cause, and the response has been gratifying.
"It's been amazing the outpouring of people who want to get Lisa to the Grand Canyon. "
The total amount raised in the last few weeks has reached $1,500, but to fly the entire family there, Sara's goal is $2,000.
