Downtown Missoula's biggest retail store is closing its doors in 60 days.

Shoppers streamed out of Macy's Saturday carrying white bags with the company's signature red star - proof they're taking advantage of the department store while they still have the chance.

On Tuesday Macy's headquarters announced the Missoula store is one of five national locations under-performing. Macy's Inc. will close it in 60 days.

The clearance sale begins Sunday, but plenty of shoppers found sales Saturday.

"It's very busy," said Macy's shopper Wendy Rogers. "Everyone's come out of the woodwork because the store's closing. It's too bad we didn't have those shoppers before the store decided to close."

Another Missoula shopper, Sheila Miller, said the shelves are full and there's still plenty of sizes.

"I saw things that weren't quite a big enough sale for me to purchase them today, but I'll keep my eye on some of the items and come back and watch the progress of how the store goes in its closing," she said.

The shoppers said store employees told them Saturday was the last day to use their coupons and gift cards because Sunady the liquidators take over as the clearance sale begins.

The shoppers also said they are anxious to hear what will happen to the building and who will move in next.

The Business Improvement District says they hope to keep retail on the ground floor.
