BIGFORK - Several prescribed fire projects on the Flathead National Forest may be implemented as early as this week, if weather conditions are favorable.

The project areas are located near Blacktail Mountain, Crane Mountain, Condon, and Tally Lake.  Smoke will be visible from these locations across the Flathead Valley and Swan Valley.

The project areas include:

  • Blacktail Mountain Area-  slash piles from fuel reduction projects located in the Truman, Dayton and Patrick Creek Drainages, and 128 acres of underburning above Rogers Lake
  • Crane Mountain Area-  180 acres of underburning several miles south of Ferndale, above Woods Bay in the Estes Lake area and some pile burning along the eastshore of Flathead Lake near Beardance
  • Condon Area-  underburning various areas east of the Forest Service Workstation and in the Rumble Creek Drainage, and some pile burning in the Holland Lake and Pierce Lake areas
  • Tally Lake Area- hand piles from fuel reduction projects located along the Tally Lake and Farm to Market roads.

These burns were located and designed for their potential to be controlled and not escape as wildfires. These projects are in compliance with Montana Air Quality Standards and coordinated with Montana State Department of Environmental Quality.
