KALISPELL - Toys for Tots, which annually raises money and toys to fill the stockings of children in need, needs volunteers to pitch in while the Flathead's longtime coordinator recovers from an illness.
Carey "Dill Pickle" Dill normally organizes the Flathead Valley Toys for Tots, but after spending several days in the ICU with pneumonia, Dill needs to stay at home and recover.
In Dill's absence, it's fallen to Judy Hawley to run everything. "Usually I'm the one that just does the boxes and he was the go-get guy. And now I have to try and find as many volunteers as I can," Hawley said.
She said she's been filling between 50 to 70 boxes with toys every day. Hawley says it would be a great help if people came to stuff boxes. SHe says many kids are counting on them this year.
"There's a lot of need, and this year we have a lot of new people. I don't know where they're coming from, but there is a lot of new people that are signing up," Hawley said.
Hawley says if you can spare a gift and/or some of your time, she'd be grateful, and Dill Pickle can rest knowing the job is done.
