MISSOULA - A new half-mile loop trail opened Saturday to kick off the $28 million Fort Missoula Regional Park Project.
The trail connects with the existing mile-long trail in Fort Missoula and is the first step in creating a 247-acre park, which will feature 5 kilometers of trails, eleven recreation fields, picnic spaces and much more.
The plan has been in the works since 1995 and was named one of America's Great Outdoors Programs.
John O'Conner, a Missoula Parks Board member, says the park will highlight the importance of Fort Missoula and help get more people outside. "We feel it only enhances the park system and celebrates the history and provides that economic benefit. And we feel like it can be the gem of the Missoula park system."
The Friends of Fort Missoula Regional Park are assisting the city in getting the park developed and working to raise $4 million to help pay for the $28 million project.
