WEST GLACIER - A freight train carrying apples and frozen meat derailed near West Glacier early Friday morning, disrupting Amtrak and other freight service through northwest Montana.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesperson Gus Melonas tells us the train was traveling east from Seattle to Chicago when it derailed in West Glacier just before 3:00 a.m.

He said the train's four locomotives and the first freight car all derailed during the accident, but no one was injured, and the cause is under investigation.

Maintenance crews are onsite getting the cars and locomotives back on the track. Melonas expects the tracks to reopen sometime Saturday.

Until then, freight trains were being detoured on Montana Rail Link, through the southern part of the state.

The derailment also disrupted Amtrak's Empire Builder passenger train between Chicago and Portland and Seattle.

Buses transported passengers from Whitefish to Shelby.
