Griz Ward tapped for academic honor

MISSOULA- University of Montana forward Mathias Ward is one of just five players to be named to the Co-SIDA Capital One Division Academic All-District 7 men's basketball first team, the organization announced Thursday.

A 6'7", 236-pound junior from Gig Harbor, Washington, Ward is ranked in several categories in the Big Sky Conference for the 15-6 Grizzlies. He is Montana's third leading scorer, averaging 10.4 points a game.

He is currently ranked second in the Big Sky in field goal percentage at 57.3% (82-of-143), 12th in free throw percentage at 76.1% (51-of-67), and 18th in scoring.

Ward, a three-year letterman at UM, now advances to the national ballot with a chance to make the Co-SIDA Capital One Division 1 Academic All-American team.

District 7 Winners

  • Brian Stafford, University of Denver, Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif., 3.7 in Finance.
  • Mathias Ward, University of Montana, Jr., Gig Harbor, Washington, 3.70 in MBA program. Has degree in business.
  • Connor Frizzelle, Rice University, Sr., Red Oak, Texas, 3.64 in Kinesiology - Health Science.
  • Mikey Manghum, Oral Roberts University, Jr., Derby, England, 3.96 in Finance.
