Gun involved in weekend Missoula incident found

MISSOULA - Divers have recovered a gun a 20-year-old suspect allegedly dropped into a ditch while running from police Sunday afternoon.

Missoula police, the fire department and search and rescue personnel all combed an area behind a motel on West Broadway Monday morning and just before 11:30 a.m., where they found the weapon.

Police say Joseph Peasley's friend called 911 Sunday afternoon saying he was concerned because Peasley was coming over to his house with a gun.

Officers say they saw the suspect riding his bike near Scott Street and asked him to stop, but Peasley took off and led them on a five-mile pursuit, weaving through traffic on his bike.

He then jumped off his bike and ran behind a motel on West Broadway, where officers saw him pull something from his waistband and drop it into the water. An officer fired a warning shot into an embankment and Peasley stopped and was arrested.

Police say Peasley is a registered violent offender and he's in jail for probation violation.

The officer who fired his gun is on administrative leave while the police department investigates to make sure he followed proper procedures.
