WHITEFISH - Officials are still piecing together a shooting in Whitefish that left one man dead and his girlfriend in custody.
The shooting happened in the 400 block of Colorado Avenue, with Police Chief Bill Dial saying that neighbors reported hearing screams and then a gunshot just after 9: 30 p.m. on Saturday.
Whitefish Police say in a news release that just after hearing a gunshot, Katherine Lanegan knocked on a neighbor's door and said she had just shot her boyfriend, Ordean L. EngeBretson, 42.
We spoke with a couple of neighbors on Sunday who declined to speak on camera, and told us that while didn't actually see the incident happen, they did hear a woman yelling and then saw police arriving at the scene.
"Whitefish officers responded and discovered a male lying on the floor of his residence and a female outside a neighboring residence sitting on a porch with a weapon, and obviously in some distress," Dial explained.
EngeBretson was pronounced dead at the scene, with Dial saying he was shot several times with a pistol.
"We are in the midst of the investigation, but it does appear there was some type of an argument at which time Ms. Lanegan told us she was attempting to defend herself and shot Ordean multiple times in the torso," Dial said Sunday.
Whitefish police are continuing to investigate the incident, and Lanegan is being held at the Whitefish Jail until the Flathead County Attorney's Office determines if charges will be filed.
Dial says this is the first homicide to happen within Whitefish City Limits since 2002.
