ST. IGNATIUS- The cause of the fire that destroyed a historic building in St. Ignatius is still unknown.
Local fire officials have been helping the Lake County Sheriff's Department and the Montana Department of Justice investigate the June 2nd burning of the old Mercantile Building. The incident is not yet linked to the other suspicious fires in Pablo or St. Ignatius.
The fire department is trying their best to prevent any future arsons in the area, but they admit sometimes it can be tough.
"That's hard to do with the volunteer department where all of your guys are basically working out of district during the day. We've gone around. We've taken some pictures of abandoned buildings in the area and informed the Sheriff's Department of stuff that's going on so hopefully they can keep an eye on them, but it's a tough challenge," St. Ignatius Fire Chief Martin Frazzini explained.
Anyone with information about any of the recent fires is asked to call Crimestoppers at (406) 883.7309. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
