POLSON- A Lake County Sheriff Detention officer is on leave after being arrested for drunk driving while off duty.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office reports the 911 center received several calls on Saturday at around 10:15 p.m. about a two vehicle crash in the Jette Lake area of U.S. Highway 93 North.

When officers responded to the scene, they discovered that one of the vehicles had left the scene of the crash, but was later located along with the driver, Mathew Walker, a detention officer for Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The Montana Highway Patrol processed Walker for DUI and cited him for three misdemeanor charges including: driving under the influence of alcohol, which it is first offense; failure to identify self and vehicle when involved in an accident and failure to give notice of accident by quickest means.

Three people involved in the crash went to the hospital and Walker has been placed on administrative leave pending final determination of the case.

"I would say DUI raises the level anytime anyone is under suspicion of driving under the influence, whether on duty or off duty. It's going to raise the level where were gonna want to step back and access where the employee is at," Lake County Undersheriff Dan Yonkin explained.

"Our general course of action is always to place that person on administrative leave until we can make that determination whenever it involves a DUI or another significant case," he added.

Walker is set to appear in Lake County Municipal Court in Polson on Wednesday.
