HELENA- Libby residents who became sick from asbestos exposure from the former W.R. Grace vermiculite mine will see financial retribution from the state.

The District Court in Helena approved the $43 million settlement with the state of Montana on September 8th.

Only $27 million will go to the 1,128 victims with the remaining $16 million going to pay attorney fees and other costs. The payout breakdown comes to about $24,000 per person.

The state has 30 days to put the money, that's coming from the State's Self Insurance Reserve Fund, in the settlement trust fund.

The settlement resolves and dismisses all of the Libby Mine claimants' cases and claims against the State of Montana.
