It didn't take long for Realtors to adjust to the news Macy's will be leaving downtown Missoula.

In fact, several parties are already talking to the Business Improvement District (BID) expressing their interest in the property.

BID director Rod Austin said the corporate real estate office called him Tuesday, asking the BID to help monitor the building once it is vacant. Austin said the corporate office has been talking about the sale of the real estate for "at least a couple months now" - and now the word is out, several companies want to buy.

"I know the amount of interest that's been generated just since yesterday when the announcement was made," Austin said.

Soon there will be just a handful of corporate stores downtown, but Austin said that over time, downtown Missoula will move forward.

"Macy's for a lot of people is an emotional loss," he said. "I think it will have an economic impact in the short-run. In the long-run, I see it as an opportunity for downtown Missoula. "

A new parking garage near the Macy's lot on Front and Pattee should increase the property value, but Austin hasn't heard a sale price for it yet.

It will go on the market following the Macy's 60-day clearance sale that begins Sunday.
