MISSOULA- A Flathead Valley man will spend more than 15 years in federal prison for an Evergreen robbery, kidnapping and carjacking.

The robber told the judge he wanted to use the drugs he stole from the pharmacy to kill himself.

Shawn Patrick Malarkey told the judge on Friday that he's very ashamed of his actions and the fear he caused when he walked into an Evergreen Pharmacy, racked his gun and demanded drugs.

A few days after the March 2011 incident that pharmacist shared his life and death story.

"He pulled out a pistol, a semi-automatic pistol, and put a round in the chamber. And said ‘I'm gonna shoot you in the head unless you give me all your oxycodone right now'," George Yeats recalled.

Malarkey told the judge during the sentencing that, "the pharmacist was a good man. He was my pharmacist. He knew who I was."

Prosecutors say Malarkey had Yeats take him and drive away from the pharmacy. He later dropped off Yeats unharmed and stole his pickup truck.

"I just wanted to get him out of the store, what was going through my head was...you really wanna know? I was thinking...'Gosh, I hadn't written my will yet'," Yeats said.

Deputies later found Malarkey passed out on a bench at the Whitefish train station, after he overdosed on oxycodone.

Prosecutors say Malarkey suffers from mental health issues and he tried to kill himself several times before this incident.
