BUTTE - Police in Butte are investigating a fatal highway shooting that they believe may be self-inflicted.

Butte-Silver Bow Police Captain Doug Conway says the incident happened around 4:30 Monday afternoon, about a mile south of the junction of Interstate 90 and Interstate 15.

A Montana Highway Patrol Trooper says he was in the process of making a traffic stop of a pick-up truck when the shooting took place.

Conway says a preliminary investigation indicates the male victim died of a self inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities are withholding the man's identity, but Conway believes the victim is a Butte resident.
