(UPDATED) KALISPELL- Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials say that a man was mauled by a bear early Friday morning in Northwest Montana.

FWP Regional Supervisor Jim Satterfield says around 7:30 a.m., it was reported a man was attacked by a black bear in the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

The man was flown to Kalispell Regional Medical Center by ALERT helicopter, but there's no word on how badly hurt he was.

The attack happened in the Black Bear Drainage south of the Spotted Bear Ranger District, and Satterfield says FWP staff are on site investigating the incident.

FWP killed a black bear they believe that was involved in the mauling. They say the bear matched the description, had blood on its claws and pepper spray on its face.

Though black bears may be overlooked as a threat, they are still very dangerous and officials say to expect higher bear activity as winter approaches.
