HELENA - A man is facing a felony charge of partner/family member assault after an overnight incident at a Helena hotel.
Helena police responded to a 911 call at around 12:30 a.m. at the La Quinta Inn, and say that when they arrived, they found Bryan Neil Arvidson in the parking lot, covered in red, claiming that he had been shot.
Police later found that Arvidson had been pepper-sprayed in the face by the hotel clerk after allegedly assaulting his (Arvidson's) estranged wife, who was staying in one of the rooms.
"He was leaving the room and he was calling for help down at the front desk and one of the clerks came up and encountered this male. And he took a swing at him, according to the clerk, the suspect did. And the clerk had some pepper spray for self-defense and sprayed this person with pepper spray," Helena Police Chief Troy McGee said.
Authorities say that the hotel clerk was well within his rights to use pepper spray in his defense after Arvidson took a swing at him.
Arvidson was charged with felony partner/family member assault and misdemeanor assault and was released on his own recognizance. He faces a mandatory 30 days in jail if convicted.
Arvidson was also directed not to have contact with his wife and two small children, who were also staying at the motel.
