Man sent to prison for hunting, trafficking eagles and hawks

BILLINGS - A Crow Agency man will spend two years in federal prison for trafficking in eagles and hawks.

Prosecutors say in September of 2009, Gilbert Walks was picked up by a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service informant as he walked along a highway near Billings.

The men began discussing eagle feathers and then over a several month period, Walks offered to sell the informant hawk and eagle feathers, wings and whole-carcass dead eagles.

In one instance he asked the informant if he wanted to buy some eagle and hawk feathers and described how he hunted the birds near Pryor.

Walks also told the informant he had a previous conviction for selling eagle feathers after hunting them on the Crow Reservation.
