A U.S. Magistrate judge has recommended the dismissal of a lawsuit by groups in support of Montana's Firearms Freedom Act, which states federal gun laws do not apply to guns made in the Treasure State. The judge agreed with a brief filed by several anti-gun groups, arguing the law is unconstitutional.

Police are treating Monday's fire at a Butte produce and supply building as suspicious and are considering arson as the possible cause according to Butte police. The fire was reported early Tuesday morning and Butte-Silver Bow Fire Marshal John Lasky says the blaze may have erupted in the basement.

An initiative to cap payday loan rates is on the ballot for the first time in Montana's history after over 27,000 voter signatures were collected to put I-164 on the election ballot. Supporters of the initiative kicked off the campaign to make sure the measure passes in November on Wednesday with rallies in Missoula and Great Falls.

Montana scientists are taking part in a $3.85 million research project that's taking a look at how a changing climate will influence wildfires. The work, which is being pursued in partnership with scientists in Australia and New Zealand, kicked off on Wednesday. A MSU professor the goal of the work is to identify how wildfires are driven by human activities and climate change.
