HELENA- Democratic candidate for Montana Attorney General Jesse Laslovich announced his major campaign initiative on Monday at the Capitol in Helena.
Laslovich says if elected he will bring a bill to the Montana Legislature in 2013 to crack down on DUIs. He says he wants to create a new crime called "child criminal endangerment."
"Right now under current law we only have minor additional penalty for those who drive drunk with children in the car and I want to change it," Laslovich says. "Under my legislation, the offender may be charged with a felony. Whether it's their first offense, second, third or fourth. If they blow over twice the legal limit, they will spend some time behind bars and they must also successfully undergo inpatient alcohol treatment."
Laslovich says if elected he will also focus on beefing up the Office of Consumer Protection to protect the elderly.
Laslovich faces a tough primary against Democrat Pam Bucy. Bucy previously announced her campaign initiative will be to create a program called eSmart Kids, which uses law enforcement to educate young people on the risks of internet crimes.
Laslovich says he thinks protecting kids from online crimes is important.
"The sexual predator issue is something I've been working on much longer than any other candidate who is running. When I was in the Legislature, Chairman of the Judiciary committee, we brought through the legislation which cracks down on sexual predators," Laslovich says.
Laslovich is also running against two Republicans: Clancy attorney Tim Fox and State Senator Jim Shockley of Victor.
