MT band to walk red carpet at the American Music Awards

BILLINGS - They're a local rock band on the verge of making it 'big' in the music industry.

"We are, self-proclaimed, straight-up rock 'n' roll," said The Farthest Edge lead singer, Patrick Michaelis. "We're just doing everything we can, working as hard as we can everyday, seven days a week, trying to make it."

The hard rock band is trying to make it with their own songs and their own style.

"All of the songs that we play, except for two, are originals," Michaelis said. "We strive, every single show that we play, to bring a new element to our stage show. Something that makes us bigger than life."

Their sound is both intense and unique, created by five tight-knit musicians: Matt, Patrick, Stefan, Rich and Zack.

"It's a family," Michaelis said, surrounded by his band mates. "A band is always a family. We're a bunch of brothers."

And just like a family, all ages are involved.

"It starts at 16 and it ends at 27," the guys chimed in, with a laugh.

Drummer Zack Goggins, 16, is the youngest band member. "It's a very unique position," the teen admitted. "It's nothing I ever would have guessed about two years ago, but I wouldn't trade it for the world."

He's mature for his age, but his four band mates still consider themselves his dads.

"We watch over him," Michaelis said, as the others nodded in agreement. "And we make sure that the corruption comes in small, small doses."

The Farthest Edge started less than two years ago, but already the Billings band has a management company in Los Angeles and this weekend they'll be walking the red carpet at the American Music Awards.

"We're going to try not to trip and try to say everything right," Michaelis said with a laugh. "We're going to be sitting with the stars who will be wondering who the heck we are, a bunch of nobodies from Billings, Montana. But, it's going to be a blast. We're really excited."

And they're hoping that one day, they'll be the rock stars performing in front of millions.

"Just to be able to tour around and play rock 'n' roll as our number one lifestyle is the main goal," Michaelis explained. "I see in our future, I see us getting a hold of that dream. We're so close."
