The Montana Highway Patrol is stepping up its traffic patrols through the 4th of July which is one of the deadliest times of the year because of folks getting behind the wheel after drinking.
MHP Trooper Donald Lee offered up some advice on staying safe over the holiday: Designate a driver; arrange for someone to pick you up; keep ride options, like friends, neighbors or a taxi service on speed dial, use a "ride home" program; and if you throw a party, provide a "ride home" program.
Lee says a little planning goes a long way toward a safe celebration. "Crashes occur all the time. We want you to slow down and get to your destination safely. Leave early if you have to. And wear your seat belt. You're going to stay alive while you're in that compartment."
Troopers will be out on the road looking to deter speeding, encourage seat belt use, and making sure that child restraints are being used correctly.
