Exxon Mobil continues to look for the cause of an oil spill into the Yellowstone River that has soiled miles of shoreline.
Gary Pruessing, president of ExxonMobil Pipeline Co., said during a press briefing today they have confirmed oil at least 25 miles down river. Pruessing said they are continuing the cleanup effort and are making some progress. He said they encourage landowners down river continue to look for oil that has washed ashore.
Pruessing added they are still looking for the best way to fix the rupture but the Yellowstone is near flood stage and running fast and high. The pipeline was shut down minutes after a pressure difference was detected in the line. Earlier Tuesday Governor Schweitzer toured the area.
"The cleanup is done when the State of Montana says it's done," said Governor Schweitzer. "Disaster and Emergency Services, Department of Environmental Quality and other involved state agencies will monitor Exxon Mobil and any other responsible parties until this spill and impacts of this spill are completely cleaned up. The parties responsible will restore the Yellowstone River."
Governor Schweitzer also issued an Executive Order Tuesday authorizing expenditures for state agencies arising from the oil spill.
The public can contact the DES offices at 406-324-4777 to report about the spill or if they have questions or concerns.
