RED LODGE - The Carbon County Attorney has confirmed that a case of neglected horses is being investigated.

The Humane Society of the United States received a call about the alleged neglect earlier in the week and informed Carbon County officials.

Carbon County Attorney Alex Nixon can not give any details, but says the horses are in need of food and care. Nixon did say the incident is on a ranch in Carbon County and involves about 60 horses.

It's a possible case of animal abuse and the conditions are poor. Nixon says it's too early in the investigation to know if there will be any criminal charges.

"It's premature for me to go into that until I've had a chance to review the reports from all of the officers involved," Nixon said. "There are a number of horses, somewhere around 60, that will be in need of any sort of donations that may be available or any help that may be available in regards to hay or any other basic necessities as they do seem to lack for proper nutrition."

Nixon added that the Beartooth Nature Alliance and the Humane Society of the United States are both helping with donations for the horses.
