KALISPELL - There had been 53 cases of influenza confirmed in the Flathead earlier this week, but just days later that number has nearly tripled.
Health officials say 42 new cases were reported on Friday afternoon alone, bumping the count to 140 this season. And those numbers only reflect results submitted by area clinics.
Flathead City-County Health Department Director Joe Russell says more cases will likely be confirmed when the department receives results from Kalispell Regional Medical Center next week.
Russell says it is not unusual to see the flu case numbers compound like this for a little bit, though it normally doesn't happen until later in the flu season.
