MISSOULA - Saturday mail could be a thing of the past. That is, if the Postal Regulatory Commission approves a proposed five-day week.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) expects to face a $238 billion shortfall over the next decade, so its postmaster general is proposing a plan to cut costs.

In the plan, USPS would only deliver mail Monday through Friday, eliminating its Saturday service.

Florence Hamp has lived in Missoula for 45 years and said she likes getting mail on Saturday. "I think we've been raised on six days of delivery. It would be difficult to just go to five," Hamp said.

But Missoula resident Nate Wilson said the change would be of minimal concern. "It wouldn't really affect me," he said. "I usually come here on Tuesdays ‘cause it's my day off. But, sometimes on Saturday I come and pick my mail up, so that's all I really care about. I usually don't mail too many things."

The other proposed changes include restructuring retiree health benefits and increasing prices and postal products.

The government currently mandates USPS to deliver mail six days a week. Changing that schedule would require approval from Congress.
