Several thousand workers will be losing their jobs after Sam's Club CEO Brian Cornell announced on Sunday that 10,000 jobs will be cut. The number represent 9% of the warehouse club operator's workforce.
Wal-Mart owns Sam's Club and says it plans to outsource its product-sampling department to marketing company Shopper Events and eliminate another unit.
"Our demos can be a competitive advantage and we want to take this member experience to the next level," Cornell said in a memo to staffers.
Employees were told the news at mandatory meetings on Sunday morning. The company also cut its new business membership representative positions, affecting about two staffers per store.
Wal-Mart closed 10 Sam's Club stores earlier this month, resulting in about 1,500 jobs being lost. Sam's Club employs about 110,000 people.
There's no word on if any employees at any of the Montana Sam's Club stores will be laid off.
