MISSOULA - More llamas are leaving the Montana Large Animal Sanctuary in Sanders County in the first step to finding new homes after the rescue ran out of money.

A Colorado sanctuary took in 121 of the Montana llamas earlier this week and om Thursday, 17 llamas settled into a new temporary home at the Western Montana Fairgrounds in Missoula.

Eight adult llama moms and nine babies, or crias, stepped out of an enclosed llama trailer and into a spacious fenced-in area.

AniMeals Marketing Manager Jessie Rogers helped coordinate the effort. She said the move brings the llamas closer to health care while slowing down the reproduction rate at the sanctuary.

"It gets 'em away from the boys," Rogers said. "We all know what happens when boys and girls get hanging out with each other. And while these little guys are adorable, we don't want those to continue."

This group of llamas is not yet ready for public viewing, but if you're interested in adopting, an application is available here.

"Our whole goal through this thing is keepin' ‘em fed, fat, health and finding ‘em homes," Rogers said.
