MISSOULA- Many women visit their hair stylists with hopes of looking more beautiful, but at one local salon women took a seat for their health on Wednesday.
Boom Swagger salon and the The Sierra Club teamed up to offer free mercury testing for women where stylists snipped a few strands of hair to be sent to a lab at the University of Georgia for testing.
The Sierra Club says 1 in 6 women of childbearing age already has enough mercury in her body to put a baby at risk of developmental problems.
Jennifer Hudson and her young son both submitted hair samples. She says she eats fish and is curious to know if she has high mercury levels because she is thinking about having another child,
"It's free to come and get tested and easy because they just take a small piece of your hair. I always think about it when I eat seafood and I love it and you know we don't get a lot of it in Montana but I'd like to know. We've been thinking about having another baby so I wanted to know for those reasons too."
The Sierra Club says test results should be ready in three weeks.
