Officials have a number of tools to help manage bears in Montana, and one of them is 10 year old Ursa, a Karelian "bear dog."

Mike Madel, a biologist with MT Fish, Wildlife & Parks, explained, "She's been working with me ever since she was a little puppy.

Ursa's natural instincts help her sense when a bear is present, track where a bear may be, and even attack a bear if necessary.

"A lot of grizzly bears, in the Rocky Mountain Front, anyways, are very accustomed to ranch dogs. Ranch dogs will bark at a bear but keep their distance," Madel explained. "Karelian bear dogs will go right at them and they'll bite it if they can. Ursa actually has reached in and bit a bear before."
