What has 696 legs, 174 tails and purrs? The answer is the cat corner at the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter. The shelter is taking special steps to try to find good homes for its growing number of feline residents.
If you've ever thought about adopting a cat, now would be a great time. Currently, 174 cats are calling Heart of the Valley home.
Kathryn Hohmann from Heart of the Valley says the shelter is trying different options to try to find good homes for these felines.
"We're concerned about making sure these cats find great homes, so we're doing a couple of different things. We have a partnership with Pet Smart, we have about 12 cats out there. We're also offering people the ability to come down to the shelter and get a free cat through the month of July."
The free offer is only for adult cats, there is still a fee for kittens. Also, Hohmann says, if you're looking to control a rodent population, Heart of the Valley has a few friends for you as well.
"If you're looking for a cat that used to being a little bit more independent and wants to work for a living, and if you have a barn or a warehouse or other out buildings , you might want to come down and asks about our Mouser Program, and mouser cats are free as well."
All adopted cats are spayed or neutered and microchip implanted. The shelter is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
