MISSOULA- Slots are filling up fast for an avalanche safety class that's being held at the University of Montana later this month.

Scott Schmidt with the Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, a snowmobiler and former avalanche forecaster is the lead instructor for the three-hour session as well as for the two field days scheduled.

This is a Level 1 class geared toward snowmobilers and will take place from February 24th through February 26th. The classroom session will be held on Friday the 24th beginning at 5 p.m. in room 210 of McGill Hall.

Anyone interested in taking part in the class need to have a snowmobile in good working order and intermediate riding experience. Participants also must have an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.

The session is limited to 10 people and costs $150 per person. Visit the UM Outdoor Program for more information or call (406) 243.5172 to register for the class.

A similar event is set to take place at the beginning of March in Hamilton.
