MISSOULA- The search committee looking for the University of Montana's next athletic director has a busy week.
The committee is narrowing down a list of some 60 applicants, and the best will come to campus for interviews that could include a meet-and-greet with the public. The school plans to name a new athletic director by the start of the academic year.
Board of Regents associate commissioner Kevin McRae says they're pleased with the quality of applicants.
"This is a really complex job, overseeing the success of 14 NCAA intercollegiate programs," McRae said. "We feel the strength of our athletics program and the strength of the candidate pool are bringing us some really exciting candidates."
UM President Royce Engstrom fired Athletic Director Jim O'Day and Grizzly head football coach Robin Pflugrad last spring, saying the school needed a change in leadership.
Interim AD Jean Gee is also under consideration for the job.
