UM student taking trip into Montana's music history

MISSOULA - When Rock and Roll exploded in popularity during the 1950s and 1960s, some young Montanans got together around the state to participate in the action.

Now one Missoula resident is collecting the recorded materials and hopes to release a compilation someday soon.

Dave Martens is a Havre native and current University of Montana grad student who first got the idea for a compilation after talking with local musicians and DJs.

He's travelled across the state, meeting former band members, and acquiring out-of-print 45s, records, and even reel-to-reel recordings.

While he's been focusing on garage rock for the first compilation, he's interested in all Montana-related recordings.

"Nobody really knows anything about what happened 50 years or 40 years ago or that kind of thing, you know? It's not well-known and being able to play a part of retelling that story has been just a blast," Martens explained.

Reporter Bernie Riggs goes on Special Assignment to learn more during Monday's 10:00 News on Montana's News Station.
