Highway 12 closed west of Lolo due to wildfire

MISSOULA - The Montana Department of Transportation has announced that U.S. Highway 12 west of Lolo is closed to all but residential traffic because of the Schoolhouse fire.

The road is closed from the intersection with U.S. Highway 93 to mile marker 25. Traffic headed east on U.S. Highway 12 from Idaho is being detoured at Graves Creek Road.

Officials ordered the closure on Monday afternoon after a wildfire jumped the road. Both the Schoolhouse fire and the now 2,000 acre West Fork Two fire are burning alongside the road.

LOLO - Wildfires burning along both sides of U.S. Highway 12 west of Lolo have prompted Missoula County dispatchers to issue a travel advisory.

"Only necessary travel on Highway 12 due to fire activity," is the message that went out just after 2 p.m. Monday as the plume of smoke over Lolo grew quickly.

The biggest blaze is the Schoolhouse fire, which at last check had burned 250 acres in an area off of U.S. Highway 12 near Woodman School.

A smaller, 60 acre blaze - the West Fork 2 fire - was also still burning.

We have a reporter on the scene and will bring you more information as it becomes available.
