MISSOULA - Monte is more than just a mascot for Montana Grizzlies fans. Since his inception he has become a University icon, not only within the community, but throughout the state of Montana.
Earning the honor of national mascot of the year twice along with continued success of one particular former costume BEAR-er, Benny the Bull, the character of Monte now holds a very high standard for those who know take on its fur.
As the character has evolved so too has the expectation to those who enter the suit themselves.
"To be Monte we need a few more qualifications than just a normal mascot. You have to have a strong dance background, you have to have a strong tumbling background and then you have to be really well-versed when it comes to drama. Because we have that title of Capital One Mascot of the Year people expect you to perform and they expect you to keep improving and coming out with cool new stunts," UM mascot coordinator Brent Reser explained.
Dan Cimmino takes full advantage of this Special Assignment with a closer look at why Monte never seems to let us down, and what it's like to be the man behind the mask. Catch the story on Friday's 10:00 News on KPAX and the Montana Television Network.
