MISSOULA--A new educational project in the University District claims to demonstrate the "unsexy" things that make a house truly energy efficient.

For the last two months, one woman has been trying to remodel a home that will help her reduce her environmental impact.

"I know not everybody necessarily believes that it's going to make a difference, but might as well try," said Molly Meyer."

Energy efficient companies Lentz Construction and Energetechs have teamed up to make Molly's home as eco-friendly as possible. They hope their green additions-which include ceiling and wall insulation, and high-performance windows--will help show people what it means to be energy efficient.

One method they're using to in the house's remodel is air-sealing, something they say is often under-utilized in other green renovations.

"We suck air out of the house and then we can go around and look where the air is leaking in," said Energetechs Energy Consultant Andy Lemann.

Those involved in the remodel say the most important thing that sets this project apart from others is the size of Molly's home. The first rule in making something energy efficient, they say, is to make it as small as possible.

A small house is ideal for those looking to reduce their resource and energy consumption. But being environmentally conscious doesn't mean having to live in a cramped space.

Lentz Construction owner John Lentz says the key is to maximize the space you're in. The crew working on Molly's house report they've already freed up 300 square feet of additional useable space in the basement alone.

And according to Molly, his work will also free up some future bill payments on her house.

"It is at the outset more expensive to remodel that way, but then the savings over time are so great," Meyer said.

Molly says that now, she's finally found a home that she can truly call her own. And one day, she hopes to pass it on to someone else.
